UW-Platteville sophomore Tyler Sigl placed fourth in the nation at the NCAA Division III cross country championships Saturday in Delaware, Ohio.
Sigl finished 8,000 meters in 25:29 to record the second-best national championship placing in Pioneer history.
UW-Platteville's Marcia Taddy was 59th in the women's race in a time of 23:24 over 6,000 meters.
Neal Holstschulte of Williams College won the individual title in a time of 25:13, followed by three runners in a pack. Widerner junior Marcharia Yuot was second in 25:26, Calvin's Tim Finnegan third in 25:28, and Sigl fourth in 25:29.
Sigl's placing was the Pioneers' fifth top-10 finish since 2001. Ryan Kleimeinhagen was ninth in 2001 and second a year later; Corey Stelljes was eighth in 2002; and Jackie Mulrooney finished ninth last year.
Sigl, a Seymour native, was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Midwest Regional champion. He was the only underclassmen among the top seven at nationals. He was 13th nationally as a freshman.
Taddy, a junior from Two Rivers, was making her second straight appearance at nationals.
UW-La Crosse claimed the men's title, while Geneseo State was the women's champion. Gustavus Adolphus' Hailey Harren won the women' race in 21:51.
