Before he boarded the bus for the University of Minnesota Friday, UW-Platteville sophomore Tyler Sigl was asked the best advice he ever received from Coach Tom Antczak.
"Don't know better," Sigl replied. "If you don't know, during a race, the people who are racing with you, you're better off. "
While Sigl doesn't try and pay attention to his competition, it's a pretty safe bet that the running world is taking notice of Sigl.
Sigl won the high-powered 411-man Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota Saturday at the Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Sigl won the NCAA Division II and III race, which featured 42 teams. He covered the 8,000 meters in 25:12, edging two runners from South Dakota for the title.
Sigl's impressive performance helped the Pioneers place ninth overall and fifth among NCAA III teams. Top-ranked UW-La Crosse won the team title with 80 points, followed by Minnesota State-Mankato with 104, South Dakota 152, Wartburg 186, UW-Oshkosh 195, Manitoba 242, Minnesota-Duluth 248, Hamline 256 and the Pioneers with 266.
Kyle Stangel, who was runner-up to Sigl the previous weekend at UW-Whitewater, had his second straight strong run, finishing 19th in a time of 26:10. Also contributing for the Pioners were Nick Fulton at 71st (27:11), Cam Klein at 89th (27:17), Austen Scudder at 92nd (27:28), Bob Dillis at 103 (27:35) and Russ Goessl at 113 (27:42).
The UWP women were sixth among 28 teams in the women's maroon, Division III race.
Marcia Taddy led the Pioneer women, placing eighth among 336 runners in a time of 23:07 over 6K. Lindsey Vick was 30th at 24:13, Jessica Scott 57th in 25:02, Jessica Davis 61st in 25:11 and Steph Martin 64th in 25:12.
