UW-Platteville lost in the championship game against host Wheaton 63-56 Saturday at the Lee Pfund Classic.
The first half was a tight one for Platteville and Wheaton until late in the quarter when Wheaton jumped out to a nine-point lead with 3:23 to go. The Pioneers trailed by 10 at the half, 33-23.
Lisa Wubben tied the game at 43-43 with 8:40 left in the game, but the Pioneers would never take the lead in the second half. The Pioneers came as close 60-56 in the final minute but Wheaton took control, knocking down three-free throws to seal the deal.
Lisa Grantman and Wubben combined for 39 of the Pioneers points. Grantman had a career-high 24 points and led the Pioneers with six steals. Wubben, who had 35 points in the two games, was named to the all-tournament team.
Kathleen Fidelia led Wheaton with 28 points followed by teammate Lynnea Kvam with 19 points.
The Pioneers travel to Coe College on Tuesday to play at 5:30 p.m.
