Eleventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point used a big second half to defeat a short-handed UW-Platteville squad 78-51 Saturday in the Pointers' Berg Gymnasium.

UWSP outscored the Pioneers 43-25 in the final 20 minutes, impoving to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fell to 9-6, 3-3.

The Pointers led 35-26 at the halftime, but UWP's Lisa Grantman and Charity Stotmeister scored the first points in the second period, bringing the Pioneers within five. The Pointers, however, ripped off 13 straight points for a 48-31 advantage, and the visitors never recovered.

The Pioneers played the game without injured Vanessa Nemitz, who was coming off career highs of 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists in Wednesday's 66-63 win over UW-Oshkosh.

Lisa Wubben led the Pioneers with 14 points, while Grantman had 12, Dru Schneider eight points and 10 rebounds and Stotmeister nine points and seven rebounds.

Haley Houghton scored 13 points and Laura Neuenfeldt 11 for the Pointers, who had 13 different players score and forced 30 turnovers.
