UW-Platteville beat host UW-Superior 55-46 Saturday, moving into sole possession of sixth place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Pioneers only allowed UW-Superior to lead by as much as two in the first few minutes of the game. Lisa Grantman got the Pioneers back ahead by one, 12-11, making a three-pointer with 10 minutes left in the half.
Another Grantman three-pointer put the Pioneers up by 12 for their largest lead of the game, 28-16, with 1:08 left in the first half. The Pioneers would go into halftime with a solid nine-point lead, 30-21.
Grantman scored 15 of her 17 points all in the first half.
UW-Platteville held the lead for the entire second half. Lisa Wubben sunk a three-pointer for an 11-point advantage five minutes in for a score of 36-25.
UW-Superior crawled back within two off an Anna Petersen free throw, 42-40, but it was not enough for the Yellowjackets. In just 16 seconds, the Pioneers came back with three quick shots to take the lead by seven, 47-40.
The Pioneers held the Yellowjackets to no field goals in the last 4:44 of the game. UW-Platteville would finish the game with a nine-point victory off a Druscilla Schneider layup, 55-46.
Grantman led all scorers with 17 while teammate Wubben had a double-double on the afternoon with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers.
Peterson and Ashley Laidley both scored 10 points for the Yellowjackets, who fell to 4-19 1-14.
The Pioneers improved to 11-12 overall and 5-9 in the WIAC. UW-Oshkosh, who was tied with the Pioneers, lost 71-55 at UW-River Falls.
