While two freshmen made their collegiate starting debuts, veterans helped carry UW-Platteville back to the .500 mark with a convincing 73-56 victory at UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon.

Juniors Lisa Grantman and Lisa Wubben had 20 and 16 points, respectively, for the Pioneers, who improved to 10-10 overall and 4-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Sophomore point guard Megan Guernsey poured in 15 points, and classmate Charity Stotmeister came off the bench for 10 points.

Freshmen Ashley Vamstad and Ashley Callahan made their first collegiate starts for the Pioneers, who halted a five-game losing streak. Vamstad, in place of injured Vanessa Nemitz, had six points and Callahan three in their starting debuts.

The new-look Pioneers started fast, taking a 26-8 lead 13 minutes into the contest. UWP led 41-25 and put the game away early in the second half. With the Pioneers leading 49-35, Wubben scored eight straight points, and Guernsey drilled a three-pointer for a 24-point advantage.

Grantman made 8-13 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds, while Wubben collected nine boards. UWP shot 50 percent from the field, the first time the Pioneers have reached that figure this season.

Krystal Parr led the Falcons (6-13, 0-10) with 13 points and gave them their only lead, at 5-3 on a three-point basket three minutes into the game.

The Pioneers return to Bo Ryan Court Wednesday to face UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m.
