Megan Guernsey scored the final six points in the second overtime, lifting UW-Platteville to a thrilling 94-92 win at Edgewood Saturday.
The non-conference affair tied the UW-Platteville for most points in a game, matching the 186 when the Pioneers beat UW-Stout 102-84 in 1989.
Two free throws each by Edgewood's Janelle Gosh and Amber Hemp gave the Eagles a 92-88 advantage before Guernsey took over. The sophomore guard made two free throws with one minute remaining, then a jump shot with 37 seconds left, knotting the score at 92. After an Eagle turnover, Guernsey nailed the game-winning basket with five seconds remaining. Charity Stotmeister sealed the win with a steal in the final second.
The Pioneers improved to 7-4 overall while the Eagles fell to 5-5.
Edgewood's Megan Scheele led all scorers with 37 points and 14 rebounds, while Gosh added 18 points.
Lisa Wubben had a rare triple double with 23 points--matching her career high--12 rebounds and 11 assists for UWP, while Vanessa Nemitz had 16 points and Guernsey 14. Lisa Grantman shrugged off a cold shooting night to record 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five steals.
The teams were tied 69-69 at the end of regulation on Scheele's jumper with five seconds remaining. Wubben made two free throws with 30 seconds left tied the game at 81, forcing the second overtime.
The Pioneers return to action Jan. 2 against Augustana at 7 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court. That game is a makeup of the Dec. 11 contest postponed by bad weather.
