UW-Platteville scored 17 of the game's final 19 points to defeat the University of Dubuque 65-49 Thursday on Bo Ryan Court.
The Pioneers led 48-47 with 7:26 remaining and then held the Spartans to one field goal the rest of the way. Ashley Wolf, Vanessa Nemitz and Druscilla Schneider scored inside the lane, giving the Pioneers a 54-49 advantage. After Dubuque's Jennifer Nichols made a fast-break layup, making the count 54-49 with 4:16 to play, UWP scored the final 11 points.
The Pioneers improved to 6-4 overall and dropped the Spartans to 7-4.
Nemitz scored a career-high 20 points, making 4-9 three-point attempts. Lisa Wubben added nine points and seven rebounds, while Angie Vamstad scored eight. Coach Tina Kuhle went deep into her bench, and players such as senior Conny Droeszler and sophomore Lindsay Aalund contributed four points apiece and invaluable minutes while keeping the team fresh for the stretch run.
Jennifer Nichols led Dubuque with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but no other player scored more than six. Jennifer Bell, who averages 12.1 points per game, fouled out with 8:46 remaining and leading scorer Briana Nelson was held to six.
The Pioneers are now off for the semester break and return to action Dec. 29 at Edgewood with a 2 p.m. tip time.
