The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers pulled off their first victory of the season, beating Aurora University 67-63 Friday at the Lee Pfund Classic in Wheaton, Ill.
Angie Vamstad made one of two free-throws with 29 seconds left to put the game at 65-63. Lisa Wubben closed the game making two free-throws with 13 seconds to go for the final 67-63 score.
The Pioneers trailed for the first seven minutes of the game and then took the lead at 12-10. The Spartans came back leading by three, but the Pioneers led the last eight minutes of the half. The Pioneers went into halftime with a seven-point lead, 33-26.
The second half stayed intense with only a two- to seven-point gap. Aurora tied the game at 45 about half way through the second but the Pioneers took control and held their own for the victory.
Lisa Wubben was the game high-scorer with 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds with 5 assists. Teammate Druscilla Scneider followed with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Ashley Daniels of Aurora led the Spartans with 19 points and Kim Voiles led with 10 rebounds.
The Pioneers will play in the championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. vs. either host Wheaton or St. Mary's, Ind.
