Pioneers topple Falcons, 54-52

Lisa Wubben matched her career-high with 21 points, including four free throws in the final 35 seconds, to lift UW-Platteville to a 54-52 upset win at UW-River Falls Saturday.

The Pioneers improved to 5-4 overall and earned their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the year after two losses. The Falcons dropped to 5-2, 2-2.

Wubben scored the Pioneers' final nine points, including a three-point shot with 1:19 remaining that broke a 47-47 tie. The Falcons regained the advantage at 52-50, but Wubben's two free throws with 35 seconds left knotted the contest once again. The sophomore made one of two free throws with 16 seconds left for a 53-52 lead, and then one of two with two seconds remaining for the final margin.

UWP survived a first half in which each team shot under 25 percent and the Falcons held an 18-15 lead. UWP shot 58.3 percent in the second half to claim the victory.

Wubben, who missed last year with an injury, matched her career high set against UW-Oshkosh Feb. 8, 2005. Freshman Charity Stotmeister came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-8 shooting.

Kim Sorenson led the Falcons with 16 points, while Traci Reimann grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday in Williams Fieldhouse vs. Edgewood at 7 p.m.
