Local standouts highlight recruiting class

UW-Platteville's 2006-07 incoming basketball recruits feature four local standouts, Coach Tina Kuhle announced.

Among the eight-person class are Lancaster's Brianna Klaas, River Ridge's Vanessa Nemitz, Benton's Megan Savatski, and Cuba City's Elizabeth Wisdom.

"It was important for us to keep Southwestern Wisconsin's talented players home," Kuhle said. "These players all come from great high school programs with very respected coaches."

Klaas, a 5-7 guard, earned first team honors by her conference and the Telegraph-Herald as well as all-state honorable mention honors. She guided the Flying Arrows to a conference championship and was selected to play in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 3 All-Star Game. She made six of eight shots and finished with 14 points in the South's 77-42 victory. The daughter of Allen and Jane Klaas, she is a National Honor Society student.

Nemitz, a 5-9 forward, earned first team all-Six Rivers Conference honors after leading River Ridge in scoring, steals and assists. She played on three conference championship squads as well as on the volleyball and softball teams. A WBCA all-star selection, Nemitz made a pair of three-point baskets in the South Division 3 victory. The daughter of Deanna Rodenkirch and Brad Nemitz, she joins older sister Stacia on the Pioneers. Vanessa plans to major in physical education and health.

Savatski, a 5-6 guard, earned honorable mention all-area by both the Telegraph-Herald and Wisconsin State Journal. She averaged 11 points, six assists and three steals per game, helping Benton to a 13-11 record. Savatski also earned all-conference honors in volleyball and softball. A National Honor Society student, she is the daughter of Jeff and Michelle Savatski and plans to major in accounting.

Wisdom, a 6-2 center, led Cuba City to its second straight WIAA Division 3 championship by averaging 14 points per game. She earned conference player of the year honors as well as the Telegraph-Herald Player of the Year awards. She was an all-area selection by the Dubuque paper and the Wisconsin State Journal while earning third team all-state honors. Wisdom also led the Cubans to the state playoffs in volleyball, being named to the state tournament team. She scored 12 points on six of eight shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds in the WBCA Division 3 all-star game, leading the South's win.The daughter of Randy and Donna Wisdom, she was an honor roll student at Cuba City.
