Pioneers face UW-La Crosse Wednesday

The UW-Platteville men's and women's basketball teams play UW-La Crosse teams with combined 13-1 records Wednesday in a key Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The UWP women, 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC, play the undefeated Eagles (7-0, 2-0) at 5:45 p.m. The Pioneer men (4-3, 0-1) tangle with UW-L (6-1, 1-1) 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. One ticket is good for both contests.

The games will be broadcast locally on the ESPN Doubleteam WPVL1590/WGLR 1280 AM as well as student station WSUP 91 FM. The WSUP broadcast can also be heard over the web at http://www.uwplatt.edu/athletics/stream/index.html In addition, live stats will be put on the Pioneer web site throughout the games.

UWP WOMEN

UW-Platteville is coming off one of the biggest wins in recent program history. The Pioneers went into Menomonie Saturday and stunned eighth-ranked UW-Stout 63-54. The Pioneers broke their 18-game losing streak at Johnson Fieldhouse behind a career-high 25 points from Holly Kaiser and good patience against the vaunted Blue Devil pressure. Despite starting freshmen guards Lisa Grantman and Stacia Nemitz and fellow freshman guard Kendall Christian playing 19 minutes, the Pioneers turned the ball over just 16 times. The Pioneers had averaged 28.3 turnovers in their last six trips to Menomonie. Stout was only able to score nine points off Pioneer turnovers. Grantman scored 12 points, while Liz Tesch added 10 for the Pioneers.

UWP continues to lead the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in defense, yielding 51.4 ppg.

Kaiser is third in the league in scoring at 17.3 ppg, while Grantman is fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio and fifth in rebounding.

UW-L WOMEN

UW-La Crosse is the lone unbeaten team in the WIAC. The Eagles are off to a 7-0 start, their best since a similar beginning in 1987-88.

The Eagles have won two straight conference road games, beating UW-Whitewater 76-64 and UW-Eau Claire 72-63. Forwards Abby Johnson and Mackenzie Hunter led UW-L against the Blugolds Saturday. Johnson, a junior, scored 15 points, while the freshman Hunter had 14. La Crosse shot 67 percent in the second half to win in Zorn Arena.

The Eagles lead the WIAC in steals with more than 13 per game. Ashlsey Wagner is the conference's individual leader with 25 in seven games.

Not only do the Eagles take the ball away, they don't give it away either. UW-L is tied with UW-River Falls at plus-4.71 in turnover margin.

Ashley Fall and Katy Searing rank second and third in offensive rebounds, helping the Eagles lead the WIAC in that category.

UWP MEN

UW-Platteville's stretch against top-notch competition continues tonight. The Pioneers beat 22nd-ranked Elmhurst 67-66 in a Williams Fieldhouse thriller last Wednesday, then dropped a 56-50 decision at once-beaten UW-Stout Saturday.

Junior guard Mike Jamerson was on fire last week, averaging 20.5 ppg. He also made two free throws with 1.4 seconds left to knock off nationally-ranked Elmhurst.

The Pioneers returned main cogs Mark Gossens (12.1 ppg), LeVon Crawford (11.1), Jeff Skemp (9.6), and Sean Krause (just returning from injury) from last year's WIAC championship team, but have relied on a host of newcomers to keep up their high level of play. Of the 485 points scored this season, 205, or 42.2 percent, have come from players new to the program. All 32 three-pointers have been made by players who had never scored one while wearing the UWP orange and blue.

Coach Paul Combs is looking for his 100th career victory. He has a 99-67 overall record in seven years, including 39-22 in three seasons at UW-Platteville.

UW-L MEN

UW-La Crosse began the season 5-0 for the first time since 1996-97. After suffering a 63-57 loss to 13th-ranked UW-Whitewater, the Eagles came back to win at UW-Eau Claire 64-58 Saturday.

Big Joe Werner had 14 points and 11 rebounds vs. the Blugolds, while Chris Fehrenbach added 13 points.

Junior forward Timothy Owen was the first WIAC Player of the Week after averaging 13.3 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 73.7 percent during road victories at Viterbo, Lakeland and Ripon.

Werner (58.3%) and Joe Bemis (58.0) are second and third in WIAC shooting behind UWP's Skemp. Six of the league's top seven shooters are here Wednesday.
