UW-Platteville and senior center Jeff Skemp set or tied several basketball records during the team's successful 2008-09 campaign.
During Skemp's 38-point performance at Wheaton (Ill.) in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, he tied the school record of 17 field goals. Steve Showalter and Mike Ehler share the record, with Ehler doing it twice during 1983. Skemp's 38 points were the most ever scored by a Pioneer in an NCAA III playoff game. The all-America center also broke his own season record for blocked shots in a season with 48 and extended his career mark to 130.
By shooting 63.2 percent from the field, Skemp had the second-best season ever, trailing only the 64.7 he shot last year. In the process, he became the school's career leader in field-goal percentage at 60.1 percent. With 1,466 points, Skemp tied T.J. Van Wie for fifth on the career scoring chart. He also started 114 games in his career, the most by anyone ever to don the orange and blue uniforms.
As a team, the Pioneers tied the 1998-99 squad for most three-point baskets with 211. Coach Paul Combs' club also set game records for most three-point baskets in a game with 14 against Clarke and best free-throw percentage with 96.3 (26-27) vs. Loras. In addition, Curt Hanson moved up to second in career three-point field goals with 181. Hanson will need just 13 his senior year to break Merrill Brunson's career mark of 193 set in 1996-2000.
