UW-Platteville's big man continues to rake in big honors.
Jeff Skemp earned first team all-American honors on both the five-member D3hoops.com team and the eight-player State Farm/National Basketball Coaches Association squad.
The 6-10 senior center from Hazel Green was the leading vote-getter in the entire NCAA III West Region in both polls, earning the region's Player of the Year honors.
He led the Pioneers to a 23-6 record, including 13-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and into the second round of the NCAA III playoffs. In their first appearance since 1999, the Pioneers beat Hope (Mich.) 83-59 before falling at third-ranked Wheaton 74-69 in overtime, despite Skemp's career-best 38 points.
By averaging 18.9 points per game, Skemp had the highest Pioneer scoring average in 21 seasons. He finished his career with 1,466 points, good for fifth place on the UWP career charts.
Skemp is the seventh UW-Platteville all-America choice and the fifth to earn multiple honors. He was a third-team selection last year by both organizations.
Previous Pioneer all-America selections were Steve Showalter (1988 NAIA Third Team), Shawn Frison (1990 NAIA Honorable Mention), T.J. Van Wie (1992 NCAA First Team, 1993 NCAA Second Team), Ernie Peavy (1995 NCAA Second Team), Ben Hoffmann (1997 NCAA Second Team, 1998 NCAA First Team) and Merrill Brunson (1999 NCAA First Team, Player of the Year).
