Monroe's Brett Stangel will attend UW-Platteville and play basketball for the Pioneers, UWP Coach Paul Combs announced.

Stangel, a 6-0 guard, was the co-Most Valuable Player in the 2007 WIAA Division 2 Championship after leading the Cheesemakers to the state title and setting tournament records for points in one game (33 vs. Seymour in the semifinals) and most free throw attempts (17) in a game. He also tied records for most three-point baskets in a game (five), most free throws made in a two-game state tournament (24) and most free throw attempts in a tournament (29). An injury sidelined him for part of his senior year, but he still earned his second consecutive Badger South honors.

Coached by former Pioneer Pat Murphy, Monroe went 63-13 in Stangel's three seasons and won back-to-back conference, regional and sectional championships.

"Our program is extremely fortunate to be adding Brett to our strong incoming class," Combs said. "He will provide us a championship attitude and good depth at the guard position. Brett played for one of the finest high school coaches and programs in the entire state of Wisconsin."

Stangel also earned two all-conference honorable mention awards in football, setting a school record with five touchdown passes on one game. He is a three-year letterman in baseball, too.

A National Honor Society student carrying a 3.6 grade-point average, he plans to major in business. The son of Reid and Cheryl Stangel, he follows his two older brothers who wore the orange and blue: Brad (1997-2001) and Bryan (1999-2003). Cousins Kyle Stangel and Marcia Taddy are also all-American runners currently competing for the Pioneers.

He will join a Pioneer team coming off a 19-7 record and second place in the tough Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 12-4 mark. The Pioneers, with only one senior on the squad, were ranked 23rd nationally by D3hoops.com. UWP plays its home games on the Bo Ryan Court, named after the coach who led the Pioneers to NCAA Division III national championships in 1991, 1995, 1998 and 1999 and who just led the Wisconsin Badgers to the Big Ten championship.
