
Eric Frese led UW-Platteville to the second-most wins in school history in 2009, as the Pioneers compiled a 21-19 record.
In Frese's third year, the Pioneers beat every Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team at least once, produced its first-ever WIAC Pitcher of the Year in Joe Lange and had two all-Midwest Region players (Lange and Jason Jacobson) for the first time in school history.
Under Frese, the Pioneers have improved by at least two wins every season. Overall, Frese has a 53-65 record at UW-Platteville and has a 188-266-3 career mark in 11 seasons.
In 2008, the Pioneers were 17-23 that included a 9-5 win over Northern Iowa. The Panthers were coming off wins over Ohio State and Northwestern, but the Pioneers surprised the NCAA Division I club.
Frese guided UW-Platteville to a thrilling season in 2007, his first year at the helm. The Pioneers opened the new Kendall Murray Field with a flourish, beating the University of Dubuque 16-3 on March 27. The Pioneers also staged the highest-scoring WIAC four-game set ever, scoring 48 runs to UW-Whitewater's 44, on the new field. He was an interim coach in 2006-07 and named the full-time coach in July, 2007.
Frese (pronounced "freeze") was the coach at Clarke College for eight years (1999- 2006), leading the Crusaders to 74 school records, the highest conference finish in school history and the first-ever national ranking.
A member of three state championship teams at Norway, Iowa, Frese earned all-state honors in 1991. His team is also featured in the movie The Final Season. He played collegiately at Mount Mercy, earning all-conference honors in 1995. Frese earned his bachelor of arts degree in sociology.
Prior to coaching at Clarke, Frese assisted at various Iowa high schools, the Red Oak Red Sox, and Porterville (Calif.) Community College. He also served as a professional scout for the Tampa Bay Devils Rays and was the head coach of the Cedar Rapids team that won the state American Legion tournament.

Watson was promoted to full-time assistant in 2007. The Boscobel native earned all-WIAC honors in 2006 after hitting .316. He finished his stellar career with 80 stolen bases, the second-most in conference history. ![]() | Rick PlaceRick Place coached in his fifth year in 2009 as a Pioneer assistant, working with the pitchers and catchers. For the previous 11 years, Place coached at Fennimore and Lancaster High Schools as a varsity and junior varsity coach. In 2004 he led Fennimore to its first-ever sectional championship game. Place also had an opportunity to work with the Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Teams during spring training in 2006 and 2007. Place is a 1987 graduate of Fennimore High School and a 1989 graduate of Madison Area Technical College with a degree in Police Science. He is an officer for the Grant County Sheriff's Office. |
