The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 12 UW-Stevens Point on Saturday at Kendall Murray Field. The Pointers (23-8, 14-4 WIAC) swept the twinbill with victories by margins of 9-4, 15-3 in seven innings over the Pioneers (8-25, 6-16 WIAC), respectively.
UW-Stevens Point had five of its 10 hits and scored seven of its 10 runs with two outs in the win. Four-different Pointers had two hits, three of which scored two runs and another drove in two for the victory.
The Pioneers’ Brad Milka and Cody Luther each had two hits to lead a nine-hit attack for UW-Platteville, who was held off the scoreboard until the final two innings of the opening game.
UW-Stevens Point starter Joel Delorit pitched eight innings to raise his record to 3-3, scattering six hits, walking three and striking out nine. His opposition from UW-Platteville Justin Crotty went seven innings, striking out three, allowing seven runs – all earned to fall to 3-5.
The contest was 3-0 until the seventh inning when Casey Barnes for UW-Stevens Point hit a grand slam over the left-field fence to extend the Pointers’ advantage to 7-0. The Pioneers cut into the lead when Levi Ney went deep for a two-run blast in the eighth to trim the deficit to five, 7-2.
A bases loaded walk and a fielder’s choice in the top of the ninth stretched the UWSP lead to 9-2. In the bottom of the ninth, the first two Pioneers reached on singles. After a fielder’s choice put the runners on the corners, Jesse Wiley delivered a RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Griffin Wiley plated the final two runs of the contest as a strikeout ended the comeback effort for UW-Platteville.
UW-Platteville scored three times in the first inning but was kept off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest as UW-Stevens Point scored four times in the fourth, six in the fifth and five more in the sixth to complete a 15-3 seven-inning mercy rule victory.
The Pioneers, in the bottom of the first, took advantage of a fielding error to plate its first run. Next, a two-RBI single by Tyler Jacobson extended the lead to 3-0.
After the Pioneers scored three times in the first, Tyler Flood pitched four innings of two-hit relief for UW-Stevens Point to raise his record 2-0. Six-different Pointers contributed to a 14-hit attack including three hits from Sean Gerber and Casey Barnes.
UW-Platteville starter Davis Lenzen went 4 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits for 10 runs – all earned in the loss to fall to 2-4. Trevor Kattre and Levi Ney each had three hits to lead a UW-Platteville offense that had nine hits but stranded eight runners on base.
After taking a 4-3 lead in the fourth, the Pointers hit two home runs in the fifth and a pair of two-RBI singles sparked them complete the mercy-rule victory.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Sunday in another doubleheader at Kendall Murray Field at noon. Between games one and two, UW-Platteville will recognize seniors – Brett Benesh, Justin Crotty, Aaron Hopson and Kevin Potorek.
