UW-La Crosse had 14 of its 29 hits with two outs to complete a doubleheader sweep of host UW-Platteville on Friday afternoon. The Eagles won game one, 19-5 and took the nightcap, 9-3 to complete a series sweep at Kendall Murray Field.
The Pioneers were victimized by the inability to get the final out of the inning and the 10 errors it made in the two games. The two losses drops UW-Platteville to 8-21 overall and 6-12 in the WIAC and UW-La Crosse improves to 18-11 overall and 10-8 in the conference.
UW-La Crosse started the doubleheader with a five-run first inning but the Pioneers cut the deficit to two with three runs themselves. The Eagles added to the lead with three unearned runs in the second inning and UW-Platteville scored a run in its half of the inning to make it 8-4 after two innings.
UW-La Crosse pounded out six runs in the third and four more in the fifth to stretch the lead to 18-4. The Pioneers got back on the scoreboard in the fifth on a Tyler Jacobson sacrifice fly to make the score, 18-5. The Eagles added their final run in the seventh with the second home run of the contest by Brooks Barga.
The Eagles’ Travis Martin and Braga each finished 3-for-4 with Braga scoring four times and driving in three. Martin finished with a run scored and six RBI in the win. Three more Eagles had three hits including Jay Fanta, Adam Cordova and Brent Jacobson for UW-La Crosse. Eagles’ starter Tim Verthein went five innings to raise his record to 3-0, allowing seven hits, five runs and striking out five.
The Pioneers’ Bill Oppreicht was the losing pitcher, falling to 2-4 and offensively, Trevor Kattre went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Brad Milka had two RBIs for UW-Platteville.
UW-La Crosse took advantage of six Pioneer errors and five two-out hits in the win. In the nightcap, the game was tied at 2 after the third inning. Then, the Eagles scored once in the fourth, two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to build an 8-2 advantage.
In the fourth, UW-La Crosse scored an unearned run to take a 3-2 advantage. The Eagles added to their lead, plating two in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Adam Cordova and three in the sixth, two of which came on the third home run of the doubleheader by Barga to make it 9-2. The Pioneers finished the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
For the Pioneers, Justin Crotty suffered the loss to fall to 3-5. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, eight runs (four earned) with three strikeouts. Baroni was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Tyler Jacobson and Bobby Patton both finished 2-for-4.
Eagles starter’ Garret Scray raised his record to 3-2, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits, two runs (both unearned) and one walk with six strikeouts. Cole Cefalu went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, plus Braga and Cordova each had two RBI to lead UW-La Crosse.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to UW-Whitewater for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
