University of Wisconsin-Platteville third baseman Aaron Hopson (pictured) had two hits in both games of a doubleheader against host No. 10 UW-Whitewater on Wednesday afternoon. The two multi-hit games by Hopson were not enough offense as the Pioneers dropped a pair of games to the Warhawks, 5-1 and 8-2.
The Pioneers (5-16, 3-7 WIAC) outhit UW-Whitewater by an 8 to 7 margin in the first game. However, UW-Platteville stranded six runners on base in the defeat.
UW-Whitewater (15-4, 8-2 WIAC) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first when leadoff batter Daniel Putnam started the inning with a double to right field. Following a passed ball, he came in to score on a RBI double by Rob Coe for the early lead.
Pioneers’ starter Bill Oppreicht held UW-Whitewater off the board until they scored three in the fifth and another in the sixth to stretch the lead to 6-0.
The Pioneers got on the board in the seventh when Hopson, who started the inning with a double, scored on a RBI single by Kevin Fessler. An attempt to score an additional run in the inning ended when Brad Milka was thrown out at the plate.
Oppriecht went six innings, scattering six hits and striking out four to fall to 1-3. In relief, Nate Poelmann pitched the final two innings and gave up just one hit for UW-Platteville. Hopson and Cody Luther each had two hits for the Pioneers.
UW-Whitewater starter Riley Tincher went eight innings, allowing eight hits and striking out eight to raise his record to 5-1. Jared Fon had three of the seven hits and David Cladis had two RBI to lead the Warhawks.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers’ started the game with the bases loaded and one out before back-to-back strikeouts ended the early threat.
UW-Whitewater answered the early threat, sending 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs to take an early 6-0 advantage.
The Pioneers’ scored a run in the third on a RBI single by Brett Benesh to cut the deficit to 6-1. Trevor Kattre started the inning, reaching base on a hit by pitch. He moved into scoring position on a ground out and came in to score on the two-out RBI single by Benesh.
UW-Whitewater stretched its lead back to six, plating a run in the sixth for a 7-1 lead. Kattre and the Pioneers scored their second run of the contest in the seventh. With two out, he singled to center field. He moved to second when Luther was hit by a pitch and scored on the RBI single by Hopson.
After the first inning, five UW-Platteville relievers combined to allow just five hits, two runs – one earned and striking out two hold the Warhawks in check. UW-Whitewater starter Jeff Donovan pitched six innings, allowing four hits, striking out seven and allowing a run which was earned to raise his record to 6-0.
