UW-La Crosse tied a school record with eight doubles in a 10-2 opening-game win over UW-Platteville, then completed the doubleheader sweep with a 3-1 victory Wednesday at Kendall Murray Field.
Jay Fanta tied an Eagle individual record with three doubles in the opener, part of the UW-L 17-hit attack. Brett Benesh and Brenden Watson each had three hits for the Pioneers, who had 11 hits but stranded 14 runners. The Eagles broke open a 4-2 game with a four-run fifth, keyed by Tyler Peterson's two-run double.
The nightcap featured a quick-paced pitching duel between the Pioneers' Joe Lange and the Eagles' Ross Benitz. The contest was scoreless until the fourth, when the Eagles scored an unearned run. The Pioneers tied the score in the sixth without a hit, as two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Levi Ney's sacrifice fly to center brought home Jason Jacobson with the tying run.
UW-L took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, as Fanta doubled, Cory Poppitz tripled Fanta home, and Sean Cory singled home Poppitz.
Lange went the distance on the mound, striking out 11 batters. Benitz allowed three hits over seven innings, and Levi Adank pitched one-hit ball over the final two frames for the save.
The Eagles improved to 16-6 overall and 9-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 13-13, 5-7.
UWP plays a four-game series at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday and Sunday, with both twinbills starting at noon.
