| Hit king Jason Jacobson |
April 4, 2009
UW-Platteville's Jason Jacobson had nine hits in 10 at-bats, including a school-record 6-6 in one game, leading the Pioneers to a split at UW-Stout Saturday. The junior second baseman from Caledonia (Racine Case) was 6-6 in a 13-9 loss in the opener, then had three more hits as the Pioneers pounded the hosts 16-3 in seven innings during the nightcap.
The Pioneers are now 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Blue Devils are 10-6, 1-3. The teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader Sunday in Menomonie, weather-permitting.
Jacobson's six-hit performance in game one broke the previous record of five, attained by Matt Northey and Mike James in 1995 and again by Ross Bennett in 2006.
The Blue Devils' Brandon O'Connell had two home runs in the opener, including a grand slam. Brian Giebel hit a two-run home run in the eighth, as the Blue Devils scored four in the frame to break a 9-9 tie.
The Pioneers roared back in the second game, totaling 16 runs on 15 hits. Besides Jacobson's three hits, Brett Benesh, Shawn Tobie and Levi Ney each homered.
Kyle Mack went all seven innings on the mound for the victory. He improved his career record to 10-7, becoming just the fourth Pioneer pitcher in school history with double digit wins. Mack scattered seven hits in the complete-game victory.
