UW-Platteville used six pitchers and a four-run fifth inning to defeat Huntingdon 6-3 Wednesday in Montgomery, Ala.
The Pioneers improved to 5-3 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 11-8, as the schools split their two-game series.
Justin Crotty, who pitched just 19 innings last year, went the first 5.1 innings Wednesday, yielding just five hits and one run. Brent Cashore, Joe Cox, Justin Cox, Nick Budden and closer Aaron Daniels followed with solid outings. Crotty earned the win, and Daniels picked up career save number seven with a strikeout and groundout against both batters he faced.
Shawn Tobie had an RBI single in the second for UWP, and the Pioneers strung together six walks and a Levi Ney RBI single for four runs in the fifth. James Gallagher had an RBI single in the eighth, scoring Tobie, who had singled.
The Hawks scored twice in the ninth on a John Otterson two-run double before Daniels came in to close the door.
The Pioneers conclude their spring trip Friday, playing at Piedmont (Ga.) at 3 p.m. Their northern opener comes Wednesday at 4 p.m. vs. Loras in Dubuque.
