Posted March 15, 2009
Joe Lange became UW-Platteville's all-time strikeout record while pitching the Pioneers to a 6-3 victory at Birmingham Southern College Sunday.
The senior left-hander struck out five Panthers, supassing by one the 171 career Ks Kendall Murray recorded from 1971 to 1975. Lange tossed an eight-hitter and halted a BSC five-game winning streak.
The Pioneers improved to 4-1 on the year, while Birmingham Southern dropped to 14-4.
Steve Nelson, Branden Watson, and Derrick Rice each supported their ace with three hits apiece. Nelson's RBI single gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the third. After the Panthers tied the score in the fourth, UWP re-took the advantage for good in the fifth. Rice singled, Nelson doubled, and Rice scored on Levi Ney's groundout to second base.
The visitors broke open the game in the sixth, scoring three times. Jason Jacobson, Rice, and Nelson all had RBIs in the inning.
The scoring outburst was more than enough for Lange, who scattered six hits through the first eight innings. He gave up another run on a pair of ninth-inning singles, but struck out designated hitter Patrick Kimmons with one out for his record-breaking K. He then induced a pop-out, and after a walk, a flyout to end the game.
The Pioneers and Panthers meet again Monday night.
