Ross Bennett steals second base

UW-Whitewater, ranked 11th in this week's American Baseball Coaches Association poll, beat UW-Platteville 5-0 and 11-4 Wednesday at Kendall Murray Field.

Adam Dominick threw eight innings of shutout ball in the opener, striking out 10. After Mike Luchterhand singled to lead off the ninth, Greg Reik came on and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Ben Prather hit a two-run double in the Warhawk three-run first. Kevin Zalnis led off the fifth with a solo home run, and Bret Adamson had a run-scoring double in the seventh.

Pioneer starter Joe Lange went eight innings, striking out six. Ross Bennett had two hits and stole two bases for the home team.

The Warhawks scored nine of their first 10 runs with two outs in the nightcap, getting two in the second, four in the fourth and four in sixth. Prather had three hits, and Thomas Corcoran two for the Warhawks.

Four UWW pitchers, including starter Aaron Dott, held the Pioneers to three hits. Jerod Haxton had two of the three and drove home a run. Bennett tripled and scored in the Pioneers' three-run fifth that featured four walks. Senior Jay Lindner made his first collegiate start, pitching into the fourth, while Wil Osmanski threw the final 5.1.

The Warhawks improved to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 11-11, 5-5.

UWP plays three non-conference foes next week: at St. Norbert Tuesday, home to Edgewood Wednesday and home to Rockford Thursday. The St. Norbert matchup is a doubleheader while the two home games are single 3 p.m. starts.
