Twenty-second ranked UW-Stevens Point completed a four-game sweep of visiting UW-Platteville Monday, beating the Pioneers 14-4 and 11-7.
The Pointers improved to 19-8 overall and 11-3 in the WIAC, while finishing a perfect 12-0 at home this year. The Pioneers fell to 12-16 and into a fourth-place tie with UW-La Crosse at 5-9. The top four teams make the WIAC playoffs.
In the opener, the Pioneers pulled within 7-4 on Ross Bennett's solo home run in the seventh, but the Pointers pushed four runs across in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth to end the game due to the 10-run rule. Lee Hawkins had three of the Pioneers' nine hits.
UWP tried overcoming an early deficit in the nightcap as well. The Pointers shot out to a 10-0 lead in the fifth, before the Pioneers put up a five-spot in the sixth. Jerod Haxton drove in two runs and Hawkins one with hits in the inning. Eric Krueger added an RBI double in the seventh, and Mike Kuhn doubled home a run in the ninth, but UWP could come no closer. Haxton, Kuhn and Mike Flood each had two hits in the second game for the Pioneers, who play host to UW-Whitewater Wednesday at 1 p.m.
