UW-Platteville scored four runs in the seventh inning to rally for an 8-6 victory at UW-La Crosse Sunday. For the second straight day, the host Eagles won the nightcap 14-4 in seven innings.
With one out in the seventh and UWP trailing 6-4, Lee Hawkins, Matt Paulus and Brett Benesh hit consecutive singles, bringing the Pioneers within a run. A pair of La Crosse errors helped bring home two runs, and Ross Bennett singled home Jerod Haxton to cap the rally.
Corey Connolly earned the win in relief, with Jay Lindner (eighth) and Aaron Daniels (eighth and ninth) pitching scoreless innings.
Benesh, a freshman from Madison (Edgewood) had three hits and four RBIs in the contest, while Bennett and Mike Kuhn each had two hits. Kuhn, Hawkins and Paulus each scored twice.
The Eagles won the second game due to the 10-run rule in the seventh. Storm Gram had three hits, scored three times and drove in five, while Greg Gibson added three hits for the Eagles. Paulus had two of the Pioneers' seven hits, with Hawkins and Derrick Rice each driving home a run.
The Pioneers are now 10-8 overall and 5-3 in the WIAC, while the Eagles are 10-10, 3-5.
UW-Platteville plays host to UW-Whitewater, 11-4, 2-2, in a key doubleheader Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Kendall Murray Field.
