UW-Platteville bounced back from a stunning defeat in game one to beat UW-Superior 12-9 Monday and finish with three wins in the four-game series that was moved to UWP's Kendall Murray Field..
The Yellowjackets, still considered the home team, scored nine runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, including Chad Beisweinger's three-run walkoff home run, to win the first game 9-7.
The Pioneers' Wil Osmanski cruised through the first eight innings of the first game, shutting out the Yellowjackets and striking out a career-high 12. Jason Jacobson had an RBI single, and Jerod Haxton had a two-run hit in the fifth for a 3-0 UWP lead. The Yellowjackets committed three errors in the top of the ninth, helping the Pioneers to a 7-0 lead.
UWS, however, rallied against the Pioneer bullpen with six hits in the ninth. Joey Hostrawser started the rally with a two-out, two-run single, and Scott Hoium and Paul Schlangen had RBI singles, bringing UWS within 7-6. Beiswenger, hitting .080, hit the ball down the left-field line and over the 330-foot fence for the win.
Jared Haxton had two hits and three RBIs in the first game for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers racked up 12 hits, all singles, to win the nightcap. Wade Axelson had a run-scoring single in the three-run first, and the Pioneers took the lead for good with a six-run sixth inning. Nick Aplin scored Jacobson with a single to tie the score at 4-4; Mike Kuhn gave the Pioneers the lead for good with a bases-loaded single; Gabe Neitzel followed with an infield hit for another run; and Axelson was hit by a pitch to force in yet another score.
Jacobson added a two-run hit in the eighth, and Ross Bennett finished the scoring with an RBI hit to left.
Mike Davis came on in the eighth with the bases loaded and retired Beiswenger on a strikeout and Rhett Williamson on a pop fly to third to preserve the 12-9 advantage.
Joe Cox earned the win by going six innings, while Davis got the save. Aplin had three hits, and Kuhn and Jacobson each had two for UWP (15-19, 8-12 WIAC). Beiswenger and Mitch Loegering each drove in three runs for Superior (13-19, 4-16).
The Pioneers play host to UW-Oshkosh Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
