UW-Oshkosh defeated UW-Platteville 12-2 and 7-3 in the regular-season finale Monday at Kendall Murray Field.
The Pioneers finished 17-23 overall, a two-game improvement over 2007, and 9-15 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The 13th-ranked Titans, 28-7 overall, finished 19-5 in the league to qualify for the four-team playoffs Friday and Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.
The Titans jumped on the Pioneers in the first inning of each game Monday, taking a 2-0 lead in the opener and a 5-0 advantage in the second.
Nolan Fadness opened the day with a triple and scored on a Pete Berg single. The Pioneers made three straight errors in a four-run fourth inning. The Pioneers' Mike Flood homered in the seventh inning, and he, Gabe Nietzel, and Lee Hawkins each had two hits in the game.
In the nightcap, the Titans had five hits in the first inning, with doubles by Brad Demmin and Kyle Kannenberg. The Pioneers had 13 hits against Jeremy Rubens, but stranded nine runners. Neitzel, Hawkins, Mike Kuhn, Jerod Haxton, Matt Paulus and Jason Jacobson all collected two hits, with Neitzel hitting a triple. Mike Davis threw five innnings of one-hit ball in relief.
