UW-Platteville jumped out to a 9-1 lead and went on to defeat 13th-ranked UW-Oshkosh 12-6 to split a doubleheader Sunday at Kendall Murray Field.

The Titans won the opener 5-1 despite 13 strikeouts by Pioneer pitcher Joe Lange.

UWP is now 17-21 overall and 9-13 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, one game behind fourth-place UW-La Crosse. The Titans remained a game behind first-place UW-Whitewater at 24-7, 17-5. The Pioneers and Titans conclude the regular season Monday at noon in Platteville.

The patient Pioneers drew five walks in the first inning, with three bringing home runs. Jerod Haxton also singled home a run in the inning for a 5-1 Pioneer lead.

The margin was enough for Kyle Mack, who threw the first six innings. He allowed just one big hit, a three-run home run to Brad Demmin in the fifth. Mack struck out three while improving to 2-2 on the year.

Lee Hawkins, who had a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth making the score 9-1, added a two-run single in the eighth for a 12-6 advantage. Aaron Daniels came on in the ninth to strike out all three batters to preserve the split.

Hawkins finished with three hits and five RBIs, while Gabe Neitzel, Mike Flood and Haxton each had two hits.

In the opener, UWO's Curt Hendricks won a fine pitching duel. He allowed just three hits over eight innings, including a Mike Kuhn home run in the sixth. Lange scattered 10 hits but struck out 13 over eight innings. Jason Fosler had an RBI single up the middle in the first, and the Titans scored two more on groundouts in the fourth. Nolan Fadness had three hits for the Titans.
