UW-Platteville and Greenville College split a doubleheader for the second straight day, as the Pioneers won the opener 5-3, and the host Panthers won the nightcap 5-1.
Junior Joe Cox, second in the conference in ERA last season, threw five and one-third innings to pick up the pitching win. Jay Lindner and Corey Connolly each retired the only batter they faced in the sixth to strand a runner on second, and Kyle Brudos pitched a perfect seventh for his second career save.
Nick Aplin, hitting .500 after the first two days, smashed a two-run double down the right-field line in a three-run second inning. Lee Hawkins and Matt Paulus hit back-to-back doubles to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth, and Gabe Neitzel singled home Paulus with an insurance run.
Greenville's Dave DeJulio shut down the Pioneers on three hits in the second game, and the Panthers made the most of eight hits against Kyle Mack for the 5-1 win. Wade Axelson singled home Hawkins, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the second. The Panthers strung together four hits in the bottom of the second, with Brian Stoff and Bryan Hobbie delivering key run-scoring singles. The hosts tacked on three in the fifth, aided by three UWP errors. Nick Budden came on to pitch a scoreless sixth inning.
The 2-2 Pioneers play a single game at Maryville, Mo. Friday at 4 p.m., then are scheduled to play two against Cornell Saturday in St. Louis and two at Westminster, Mo. Sunday.
