UW-Platteville junior Jerod Haxton hit both his first career triple and home run, leading UWP to a 7-3 victory over Tri-State (Ind.) Saturday in the first of two games in Crawfordsville, Ind. Host Wabash edged the Pioneers 4-3 in 11 innings in the nightcap.
Haxton, the 5-11, 160-pound Pioneer shortstop, exploded for a solo home run in the first and a run-scoring triple in the ninth to lead the Pioneers to the win at Mud Hollow Field.
Designated hitter Jacob Bandy added two doubles and drove in three runs to help sophomore pitcher Kyle Mack run his record to 2-0. Mack pitched 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs. Aaron Daniels pitched the final 1.2 innings to record his first collegiate save.
In the second game, played at Crawfordsville High School, Wabash's Scott Hamilton singled with the bases loaded to drive in the game-winning run in the 11th. The home school tied the score with two outs in the ninth on a wild pitch.
Freshman Steve Bomkamp doubled and tripled to pace the UWP offense. His double brought home two runs in the second, while Jason Jacobson had a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Joe Lange yielded just five hits in nine innings, striking out seven.
UW-Platteville and Wabash play again Sunday, as the Pioneers wrap up their spring trip.
