Pioneers finish four-game sweep

UW-Platteville completed a four-game sweep of UW-Superior Sunday, winning 8-3 and 10-0, and gave itself a chance to play for the fourth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season berth.

The Pioneers (13-18-2 overall) improved to 7-11-2 in the WIAC. The trail UW-La Crosse and UW-Stout, who are both 9-11, for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Eagles play a four-game set at second-place UW-Stevens Point Friday and Saturday, while the Blue Devils visit Kendall Murray Field those same days.

Wil Osmanski pitched into the eighth inning to earn the win in the opener, while Brent Cashore finished the eighth and Kyle Brudos threw a perfect ninth. Scott Dybevik and Jacob Bandy each had three hits, with Dybevik belting his fourth home run of the year. Jerod Haxton, who drove in three runs, Ross Bennett and Gabe Neitzel each added two hits to the 13-hit Pioneer attack.

Dybevik continued his hot hitting in the nightcap with four hits, part of the 15 UWP recorded. Bennett, Haxton and Jason Jacobson each had two more.

Joe Cox earned the win by throwing six innings of five-hit ball while Mike Davis pitched a scoreless frame in a game ended in the seventh due to the 10-run rule. The Pioneers played errorless ball in the second game, making 11 assists.

UW-Superior fell to 7-25, 1-19.

The Pioneers play their final non-conference game Tuesday at Rockford at 6:30 p.m. before wrapping up the regular season with those two big doubleheaders with UW-Stout.
