Titans rally to top Pioneers

UW-Oshkosh rallied twice to beat visiting UW-Platteville in a doubleheader Sunday at Tiedemann Field.

The Titans overcame a 4-1 deficit to win the opener 11-5 and a 3-1 margin to take the nightcap 8-4.

The Pioneers are now 7-12-1 overall and 1-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Titans are 17-5 overall and 11-1 in league play.

UWP had 14 hits in the opener, including 12 in the first five innings. Stee Bomkamp had three hits, while Jerod Haxton, Scott Dybevik, Derrick Rice and Nick Aplin each had two. Kuhn and Matt Paulus drove in two runs apiece, while Rice legged out a triple.

The Titans received two-run doubles from Jason Fowler in the fifth and Kyle Kanneberg in the seventh to take control. Brian Gerl picked up his WIAC-leading sixth save by going the final three innings.

The Pioneers forged a 3-1 lead in the second game, thanks to Bomkanp's two-run homer run in the sixth. The UWP defense, however, committed four errors in the seventh, leading to seven Titan runs. All seven runs were unearned against starter Joe cox, who pitched 6.2 innings. Pinch-hitter Mike Waupoose and first baseman Brad Demmin hit in runs during the rally.

The Pioneers play at Edgewood Tuesday and at UW-La Crosse Wednesday. They play host to UW-Whitewater in noon doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday. The family of the late Kendall Murray will throw out the first pitch before Saturday's opener.
