The good news: The Pioneers were able to leave soggy UW-Platteville and play two baseball games Wednesday. The bad news: UW-La Crosse used the unexpected home-field advantage to beat the Pioneers twice.
The Eagles dropped the Pioneers 8-6 and 11-2 in a doubleheader moved from Kendall Murray Field 100 miles north to La Crosse. UW-L improved to 16-13 overall and 8-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers slipped to 11-18-2, 3-9-2.
UW-L broke a 3-3 tie with five runs in the sixth, with the big blow being Storm Gram's two-run double. Ross Bennett hit a two-run home run, his eighth of the season, in the seventh but the Pioneers could not complete the comeback. Scott Dybevik had three hits, while Derrick Rice drove in three runs to pace the UWP attack.
The Eagles took advantage of five Pioneer errors in the third inning of the second game to go ahead 8-1. Dybevik, Jerod Haxton and Mike Kuhn each had two hits for the Pioneers, while Nick Aplin homered for the second time this season.
Gram finished with six hits in the doubleheader, while Tyler Peterson had four hits in the second game for La Crosse.
The Pioneers have a four-game set at UW-Superior Saturday and Sunday.
