Senior Scott Dybevik hit his first home run since 2005, and freshman Jason Jacobson belted his first career round-tripper, leading UW-Platteville to a 10-6 win at UW-La Crosse Wednesday. The host Eagles won the nightcap 10-0.
Dybevik, the lone senior, belted a three-run home run in the Pioneer fifth. UWP trailed 5-3, but with two outs, Mike Kuhn hit an RBI single and Dybevik followed with his big hit that left the park. After the Eagles crept back to 7-6, Jacobson crashed a two-run HR in the eighth inning. Matt Paulus singled home Ross Bennett with an insurance run in the ninth.
Kyle Mack improved to 3-1 with five innings of six-hit ball. All five Eagle runs were unearned in the third inning. Wil Osmanski pitched two effective innings for the second straight day, and Aaron Daniels threw two shutout innings for his second save of the year.
Bennett had a double and triple as part of the Pioneer 11-hit attack. Steve Bomkamp, Kuhn and Jacobson also had two hits apiece.
Eagles pitchers Jake Beitlich (six innings) and Eddie Sheppard held the Pioneers to three hits in the second game, which ended in the seventh due to the 10-run rule. Every UW-L starter had at least one hit, with Travis Schmitt hitting a two-run triple in the sevond and Storm Gram a two-run single in the sixth. Scott Podmolak tied the Eagles' record with his 129th career run.
The Pioneers are now 9-13-1 overall and 2-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Eagles are 13-10, 5-5.
UWP faces rival UW-Whitewater in doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday at the new Kendall Murray Field, beginning at noon. Pat and Nancy Murray, parents of the late Pioneer hurler, will throw out the first pitch before Saturday's game. Kendall Murray, the Pioneer all-time strikeout leader, was killed in a jeep accident weeks after his senior year in 1975.
