Stout rallies past Pioneers

UW-Stout rallied for seven runs in the ninth to stun UW-Platteville 7-5 in the 2007 season finale for the Pioneers at Kendall Murray Field Saturday. The Blue Devils won the first game 7-4.

Seth Maier had the game-winning hits in both games for UW-Stout, hitting a two-run double to break a 4-4 tie in the opener and a two-run single in the ninth in the nightcap to snap the 5-5 tie.

UWP ends its season 15-23-2 overall and 7-15-1 in the Wisconsin Intecollegiate Athletic Conference. The Blue Devils are 22-17, 13-11 WIAC.

The Pioneers had taken a 5-0 lead in the second game behind the pitching of Joe Cox and extra-base hits. Scott Dybevik, the Pioneers' lone senior, tripled and scored on Wade Axelson's sacrifice fly in the second. Jason Jacobson and Ross Bennett each doubled in the Pioneer sixth, extending the lead to 5-0.

Cox threw seven scoreless innings for the Pioneers. After a first-inning Maier hit, Cox retired 18 straight batters. Jay Lindner pitched a scoreless eighth, but the Blue Devils put together seven runs on five hits, two walks and an error against two UWP relievers in the ninth.

The Pioneers' Matt Paulus had four hits on the day, while Mike Kuhn, Jerod Haxton and Axelson each had two in the first game.
