Pioneers win one, tie one

UW-Platteville rallied to beat St. Norbert 9-6 in the first game of the scheduled doubleheader, and the second game ended with a 9-9 tie after 11 innings.

The tie contest, called at 7:31 p.m. because of darkness at Kendall Murray Field, was the Pioneers' first tie since 1995 and the Green Knights first since 1992.

The Pioneers are now 6-9-1 on the year, while the Green Knights fell to 9-4-1.

UWP rallied from a 5-0 hole in the opener, taking a 6-5 lead with five runs in the sixth inning. After St. Norbert tied the score at 6-6, the Pioneers scored three in the bottom of the eighth. Scott Dybevik hit a two-run single with two outs to break the tie, and Matt Paulus followed with an RBI single for the 9-6 margin. Kyle Brudos struck out the final batter with two on base to earn the victory. He pitched two scoreless frames, improving to 2-2 on the year.

Paulus had four hits, while Steve Bomkamp had two for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers rallied in the second game as well, overcoming 3-0 and 6-3 deficits. UWP scored three times in the first without getting a hit, utilizing three walks, a hit batsman and two groundouts.

SNC took a 7-6 lead when Adam Frost singled, stole two bases and scored on Dan Weitzel's two-out single in the eighth. The Pioneers took the lead inthe bottom of the frame, with Jerod Haxton knocking home two runs. SNC re-tied the game at 9-9, with the tying run scoring on a throwing error. Only one runner advanced past first for either team in the 10th or 11th.

Joe Lange threw 6.1 innings of relief for the Pioneers, allowing just two runs. Alex Brynes pitched the final seven frames for the Green Knights, yielding three runs and striking out nine.

Frost had seven hits on the day for the day to lead St. Norbert's batters.

The Pioneers' next scheduled action is Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders at UW-Oshkosh.
