Pioneers comeback falls short

UW-Platteville pushed across six runs in the ninth, but the comeback fell just short in a 12-9 loss to Rockford College Tuesday night in Rockford's Riverhawks Stadium.

The Pioneers (15-19-2) trailed 12-3 heading into the final frame before rallying. UWP scored the six runs on three hits , but the Regents (23-11) escaped a bases-loaded jam with one out to secure their eighth straight win.

Matt Paulus had three hits, while Scott Dybevik, Mike Kuhn and Jacob Bandy each had two. Shaun Dascher and Robbie Wiest homered for Rockford, and Phil Smith had four hits.

Coach Eric Frese used eight different pitchers to ready the staff for the huge weekend series with UW-Stout.

The Pioneers trail UW-Stout and UW-La Crosse by two games for the final WIAC playoff berth. UWP plays host to the Blue Devils Friday and Saturday at noon, while La Crosse plays four at second-place UW-Stevens Point.
