UW-Platteville hit three home runs to give Coach Eric Frese his first Pioneer victory while beating host Westminster College 16-5 Sunday night in Fulton, Mo.
UWP dropped its season opener in the prior game, falling 11-5 to Grinnell in a battle of Pioneers.
Preseason all-American Ross Bennett, Nick Aplin and Mike Kuhn all went deep for the Pioneers, who had 13 hits against Westminster. Kuhn and Jason Jacobson each knocked in four runs, while Jared Haxton had four hits. Gabe Neitzel also drove on a pair of runs.
Kyle Mack earned the victory, pitching six innings, while Andy Smith, Jay Lindner and Aaron Daniels each pitched scoreless frames.
UW-Platteville had nine hits in the opener against Grinnell, but eight walks helped the other Pioneers come from behind to win. Grinnell's Brett Maloney blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning, tying the score at 5-5, and then Grinnell went ahead with a five-run sixth inning. Kuhn led UW-Platteville with a pair of hits, while Aaron Ciaburri had a two-run double.
UWP faces Westminster in a doubleheader today (Monday) before returning home.
