Pioneers earn wild split

Freshman Alex Siehoff's first collegiate hit could not have come at a better time.

Siehoff's bases-loaded single with two outs in the eighth inning scored Jerod Haxton with the go-ahead run as UW-Platteville rallied to beat host UW-Whitewater 14-13 in a first game of a doubleheader Friday. The Warhawks won the second contest, 11-5.

The Pioneers overcame a 13-8 deficit to capture the opener. Mike Flood's two-run single keyed a three-run seventh inning that brought the Pioneers within 13-11. In the eighth, three walks and a hit batsman helped set the stage for Siehoff's heroics.

Kyle Brudos pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings to record the victory. The sophomore went four innings, yielding just two hits. In nine relief appearances this season, Brudos has a 1.59 ERA.

UWP banged out 14 hits against the defending national champions, including Ross Bennett's home run. Flood had three hits, while Haxton, Jason Watson and Gabe Neitzel each had two.

Bennett also homered in the nightcap, which was tied 5-5 after three innings. The Warhawks broke the contest open with four runs in the fifth, with Nick Teach hitting a two-run trip and Billy Johnson a two-run home run. Flood paced the Pioneers with a pair of hits.

The Pioneers are now 12-12 overall and 5-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the Warhawks are 15-7, 8-2.

UW-Platteville travels to UW-La Crosse Wednesday for an important doubleheader with the Eagles. UW-L is tied with UW-Stout at 7-7 for fourth place in the WIAC, with the top four teams making the conference tournament. The Pioneers, who play four games vs. UW-Oshkosh in Madison's Warner Park Saturday and Sunday, also have four games remaining with UW-Stout.
