Defending NCAA Division III national champion UW-Whitewater swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting UW-Platteville Thursday, 12-2 and 9-3.
The Warhawks improved to 14-6 overall and 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 11-11, 4-7.
The same two teams play two more games Friday at 1 p.m. at UWW's Prucha Field.
The Pioneers took a quick 2-0 leads in both games before the Warhawks rallied.
Ross Bennett's first-inning home run, his third of the year and 14th extra-base hit, gave the Pioneers the 2-0 lead in the opener. The Warhawks, however, answered with five in the bottom of the first and stretched the lead to 8-2 after three innings. Warhawk starter Mike Jacobsen allowed just one more hit after Bennett's home run.
Mike Flood's two-run single in the first inning of the nightcap gave the Pioneers a lead they held until the bottom of the third. The Warhawks broke open a tight, 5-3 game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Matt Schliewe hit two home runs for UWW, while Eddie Adamson and Mike Jacobson each hit balls that left the park.
