Pioneers sweep Titans from first

When UW-Platteville builds its new baseball field this summer, the Pioneers may be wise to use the exact same dimensions as UW-Oshkosh's Tiedemann Field.

The Pioneers swept the powerhouse Titans 7-6 and 12-7 Monday afternoon, their fifth win in their last six games at UW-Oshkosh. UWP knocked the Titans from first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as UWO fell to 18-10 overall and 10-6 in league play. The Pioneers improved to 15-15, 8-11 and remained mathematically alive for a WIAC playoff spot.

The Pioneers, usually known for their base-running and the small ball, belted five home runs on the day. Jason Watson and Alex Siehoff each solo home runs in the opener to lead a 11-hit attack. Bill Bulaga pitched the first seven innings for the win, and after the Titans' T.J. Arrowood pinch-hit an inside-the-park grand slam home run in the eighth, Kyle Brudoes came in to pitch a scoreless ninth for the save.

In the nightcap, Gabe Neitzel belted a grand-slam in the third inning; Ross Bennett, the conference's RBI leader, hit a two-run home in the first inning; and Brandon Ihm slugged a solo shot in the fourth. Watson, Neitzel and Bennett combined for six hits and nine runs scored in the game.

Ryan Slaght went eight innings for the victory, with Brudos again throwing a scoreless ninth.

The Pioneers face Edgewood College Wednesday in a single game at 1 p.m. at the University of Dubuque.
