Pioneers, Titans split games

UW-Platteville ran its winning streak against UW-Oshkosh to four games with an 8-4 victory Sunday before the Titans came back to win the second game 11-5.

The doubleheader was played in Oshkosh, as Madison's Warner Park was deemed by park officials too wet for the teams to play Saturday. The games were postponed Saturday and then moved to Oshkosh for Sunday and Monday doubleheaders. Tomorrow's games begin at noon.

The Pioneers swept the Titans last year for the first time since 1965 on the season's last day to qualify for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs, then beat them again in the post-season tournament. On Sunday, a four-run third inning helped push that winning streak to four. Gabe Neitzel's first career home run, a two-run shot, was the big blow. Corey Connolly (five innings), Nick Pepper (2.2) and Joe Lange (1.1) combined to allow the Titans to six hits. Jerod Hexton had three hits, while Mike Flood, Nick Aplin and Neitzel each had two in the Pioneers' 12-hit attack.

The Titans (18-8, 10-4) captured the nightcap 11-5, moving a half-game ahead atop the standings in the WIAC. Micky Fadness had a three-run triple in the ninth inning to help put the Pioneers away. Aplin had three hits, while Ross Bennett, Jason Watson and Mike Luchterhand each had a pair for the Pioneers (13-15, 6-11).
