Pioneers turn tables, sweep Truman State

The UW-Platteville baseball team swept NCAA Division II Truman State 6-1 and 13-8, one day after getting beat 12-2 by the Bulldogs.

The Pioneers improved to 5-3 on the year and 3-1 in the "Mutt" Miller Classic in Joplin, Mo. UWP concludes its tournament games Thursday against Missouri Southern State.

Justin Athey and Joe Lange combined on a six-hitter in the opener, with Athey pitching the first five innings for the win. Ross Bennett's two-run double keyed a five-run third inning.

In the slugfest that ensued in the second game, the Pioneers banged out 14 hits, including five extra-base hits. Gabe Neitzel had a double and a triple, while Matt Huckstep tripled, and Mike Flood and Bennett each doubled. Both Neitzel and Flood had three RBIs. Brandon Ihm and Jerod Haxton each had two hits.

The Pioneers took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, and then Kyle Brudos, Joe Cox and Bryan Aspenson each pitched scoreless innings to preserve the lead. Greg Jarosz earned his first collegiate win, coming on in relief during the fifth inning.
