Freshmen hurlers post shutouts

UW-Platteville shut out UW-Superior twice behind two freshmen starters, as the Pioneers earned their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories Saturday at Madison Area Technical College by 8-0 and 11-0 scores.

Bill Bulaga (above left) threw a complete-game shutout in the opener, and the Pioneers tied a school record with nine stolen bases. Matt Huckstep knocked in the game's first run, and Ross Bennett hit a two-run single to key a five-run fifth inning. Brandon Ihm, Jason Watson and Jerod Haxton each stole two bases. Bulaga finished with six-hitter, raising his record to 3-2.

Five straight hits led to a three-run first inning in the nightcap, which was more than enough for Kyle Mack (above right). He held the Yellowjackets to two hits over six innings. Senior Nick Pepper finished with a scoreless seventh, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Mike Flood hit a towering home run to center field that may have registered on the nearby Dane County Regional Airport radar in a seven-run second inning.

The Pioneers improved to 8-9 overall and 2-5 in the WIAC, while the Yellowjackets fell to 3-15, 0-6.

The same two teams meet again Sunday at MATC's Robin Roberts Field, beginning at noon.
