it's a conference weekend series, it must mean a weather delay for the UW-Platteville baseball team.
The Pioneers' scheduled doubleheader at UW-Stout Sunday was postponed until Monday and then eventuall cancelled, meaning all four of their WIAC weekend series this year have been delayed by weather. Only the four games vs. UW-Superior April 8-9 actually were played on the days they were scheduled, with the first day delayed two hours by wet fields. The Pioneers lost a game at UW-Stevens Point and were forced to move games to Monday vs. UW-Oshkosh.
Having already missed two Mondays worth of class time and with more rain forecasted in Menomonie Monday, the Pioneers returned home Sunday night.
Two early holes were too much for the UW-Platteville baseball team to escape, as the Pioneers lost 6-4 and 14-3 at UW-Stout Saturday.
The Pioneers dropped to 15-18 overall and 8-13 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, while the Blue Devils improved to 12-18, 9-9.
Seth Maier's two-run home run gave the Blue Devils a 5-0 lead after two innings in the opener. The Pioneers clawed back to within 6-4 but could not get closer. Red-hot Ross Bennett hit his 10th home run of the year, and his eighth in the last 14 games for the Pioneers. Jason Watson also had three hits.
Three walks, two hits and a Pioneer error helped the Blue Devils take a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, and the Blue Devils went on to the 14-3 win.
The same two teams meet again Sunday at noon in Menomonie, weather permitting.
