UW-Platteville's Kyle Mack accepted the challenge and more than stood up to it. The freshman from Lodi pitched seven shutout innings as the Pioneers stunned NCAA Division II power Pittsburg State 8-1 Monday in Kansas.
Mack yielded just five hits in his collegiate debut, striking out four. Kyle Brudos pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, and Bryan Aspenson pitched the ninth inning as the Pioneers turned in their most impressive performance of the young season.
The Pioneers are now 3-3 on the year, while the Gorillas dropped to 13-5.
Matt Huckstep, Nick Pepper and Ross Bennett helped support the staff with some offensive power. Huckstep had three hits and scored three runs; Pepper had three hits, including a two-run single in the fifth; and Bennett crashed a two-run home run in the top of the seventh.
The Pioneers out-hit the Gorillas 12-7 and committed just one error while PSU made three.
