Pioneers end trip with 16-8 win

UW-Platteville's final game on its southern trip proved to be extra special.

The Pioneers pounded out nine extra-base hits while routing host Missouri Southern State University 16-8 Thursday afternoon.

UWP improved to 6-3 overall after compiling a 4-1 record against NCAA Division II schools in the "Mutt" Miller Classic.

Ross Bennett homered and tripled for the Pioneers, while Matt Huckstep hit two doubles and a triple to lead the 15-hit attack.

Huckstep scored two more runs, raising his season total to 16 in nine games, while Bennett increased his team-leading RBI total to 14 with his sixth and seventh extra-base hits of the young season.

Jason Watson, Scott Dybevik, Gabe Neitzel and Nick Pepper each had two hits, with the latter three hitting doubles.

Ryan Slaght struck out seven in six innings to record the win, while Joe Lange and Pepper each threw scoreless innings.
