Pioneers turn back Spartans, 8-1

UW-Platteville won its season-high fifth straight baseball game Tuesday by holding host University of Dubuque to two hits in an 8-1 victory.

Corey Connolly earned his first collegiate pitching win, limiting the Spartans to one hit over six innings. He is the fourth different freshman to win a game for the orange and blue this season. Aaron Daniels, Jay Lindner and Greg Jarosz each worked an inning of relief.

Pioneer pitchers have allowed just two runs during the five-game winning streak,

UWP scored two in each of the first, fourth and fifth innings, adding a single run in the sixth for a comfortable 7-0 lead.

Scott Dybevik had two hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases to pace the offense, while Gabe Neitzel had two hits and two RBIs.

The Pioneers improved to 11-9 overall, while the Spartans dipped to 12-13.

UW-Platteville will take the momentum of its winning streak to UW-Whitewater, where the Pioneers face the defending national champions in doubleheaders Thursday and Friday.
