Leathernecks edge Pioneers in 11

Steve Knapp singled home Mike Triumph in a close play at the plate in the bottom of the 11th, lifting Western Illinois to a 6-5 victory over visiting UW-Platteville Thursday.

The NCAA Division I Leathernecks, who own victories over Michigan State, Alabama State and Chicago State, split its two-game series with the Division III Pioneers. UW-Platteville won Wednesday's game 2-1.

Triumph and T.J. Kistner singled to open the bottom of the 11th, and Triumph just beat the throw to the plate after Knapp singled to right. Western Illinois improved to 19-29, while the Pioneers fell to 17-19.

Alex Siehoff paced the Pioneer offense with two hits and two runs, while Matt Huckstep drove in a pair. v The Pioneers close their season Saturday at noon with a doubleheader vs. Rockford College on the University of Dubuque's campus. A sweep of the doubleheader would give the Pioneers back-to-back seasons of .500 or better for the first time since 1992 and 1993.
